Hugh joined Christie’s in 1978 as a furniture specialist. He took his first auction in 1984, when he became Head of the Furniture Department at Christie’s South Kensington, the busiest saleroom in Europe, where after three years as Deputy Chairman, he was appointed Chairman in 1999.
During his 35 years as an auctioneer, Hugh conducted some 1,700 fine art auctions for Christie’s in Europe, America, Dubai and Hong Kong, selling 300,000 lots for a sum in excess of £2.6 billion, including 300 for over a £1 million. Hugh has sold numerous categories of art, furniture, Asian & European Ceramics, Film, Pop & Sporting Memorabilia, Classic Cars, Wine, Silver & Jewellery, Clocks & Watches, Antiquities, Books and Sporting Guns.
